The Next Meeting of the Tolkien Society: Wednesday, April 24, 6:30 PM We'll be meeting at our usual location, ReRoll Tavern.  This month, we'll be reading Tolkien's essay "On Fairy Stories". On Fairy Stories is available in the book The Tolkien Reader , and probably other places as well. MiddleMoot! This year, Middlemoot is back in Kansas City, on Saturday, October 26, 2024. We've got some promising leading on securing a venue for the Moot this year, we'll send out an update by email and Discord when we have it finalized!

  November 2023: Updates from the Smial of the Withywindle Announcements: This month, we'll be having a virtual meeting on Discord, a week earlier than usual.  Then, on January 3, the annual Toast to the Professor, in real life.  Details below.   October 2023: Updates from the Smial of the Withywindle Ok, so this month's newsletter is a little late, I was tied up at World Fantasy Convention late in the month, and since then I've been catching up on things.  You'd think a retired person would be caught up all the time, but here we are. - Bob Clark, Chief Newsletter Hobbit Announcements: Online meeting in November, back to The Silmarillion , Hobbit Party, MiddleMoot report... As we mentioned last month, we're going to try doing some meetings on Discord, for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that some of our members are remote, and this gives them an opportunity to join in.  More details below. At our October meeting, we discussed Mary Shelly's Frankenstein.   We're going back to be reading from The Silmarillion  for our November meeting.   September 2023: Updates from the Smial of the Withywindle Hobbit Day has Come and Gone Like Bilbo and Frodo This month's meeting appropriately met on Hobbit Day (September 22nd), the day that Bilbo and Frodo left the Shire.  We turn now to the spooky month of October and (hopefully) a cooler fall season! Announcements:  Meeting date change, book for October, more... We met this past Friday at ReRoll Tavern, to talk about Beren and Luthien, and play some retro Tolkien games on their PS2.  (ReRoll's PS2, I mean.  I don't think B&L have one...) We've noticed that several folks frequently have other commitments on Fridays, so we're going to try meeting on the fourth Wednesday of the month, which was a date that worked for all of us in attendance.  We'll see how that works out.  If you have better ideas about a meeting date for the future, don't hesitate to bring them up on Discord!
